AI and IoT to Play a Defining Role in Making Indian Roads Safer: Experts at IRF India Chapter Webinar

New Delhi : The International Road Federation – India Chapter (IRF-IC) successfully organised a high-impact webinar on “Technologies in Infrastructure: Role of AI and IoT in Traffic Safety Monitoring,” bringing together leading innovators, policymakers and industry experts to discuss how emerging technologies can transform road safety and reduce fatalities across India.

Addressing the webinar, Mr. Rahul Mehra, Co-Founder, Roadcast Tech Solutions, explained how AI-powered monitoring systems are already helping commercial fleets improve operational efficiency while significantly enhancing road safety. He highlighted the growing challenge of driver fatigue, one of the leading contributors to road accidents in India.

Mr. Mehra demonstrated how AI-enabled in-cabin cameras can continuously monitor driver behaviour by detecting signs of fatigue, distraction, mobile phone usage, smoking and other risky activities in real time. Such intelligent monitoring systems enable fleet operators to intervene before accidents occur, creating a proactive rather than reactive safety ecosystem.

Speaking on the importance of citizen participation in road safety, Mr. Hardik Dave, Founder & CEO, RoadVision AI, observed that a significant portion of India’s vast road network remains unmonitored, making it difficult to identify hazards and enforce traffic regulations effectively.

He presented RoadVision AI’s innovative citizen-powered road safety platform that leverages smartphones and AI to enable citizens to instantly report traffic violations and unsafe road conditions. According to Mr. Dave, empowering every smartphone user to become a contributor to road safety can dramatically improve monitoring coverage and generate actionable intelligence for authorities.

During the interactive session, experts unanimously agreed that AI and IoT technologies are rapidly shifting road safety management from conventional enforcement to predictive and preventive systems capable of detecting risks before accidents occur.

The other speakers included Prof Amit Aggarwal ,IIT Roorkie and Mr Amarjit Dangi an AI expert

The webinar also highlighted how intelligent surveillance, connected infrastructure, real-time analytics and citizen participation can support India’s vision of safer roads while complementing national initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents and fatalities.

Summing up the discussions, Mr. Akhilesh Srivastava emphasised that technology should serve as an enabler rather than a replacement for good governance. He noted that collaboration among government agencies, technology providers, academia and citizens will be essential for building a safer, smarter and more resilient transportation ecosystem.
