Chairman - IRF India Chapter

Mr. N.K. Sinha

Message

It is a matter of great pride that IRF India Chapter is organizing the 8th Regional Conference on “Road Infrastructure for safe Mobility” from 3 – 5 October, 2013”, at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, Delhi NCR. India Chapter has taken up road safety as its mission. This will therefore be seventh Conference in the Road Safety series, being organized by IRF India Chapter since 2007. Previous conferences dealt with various topics of road safety relating to Design, Construction and Operation of Roads; Mobility and Safety in Road Transport; Accident Prevention: Road Safety Measures; Institutional Arrangements for Reduction of Road Fatalities; Road Safety Strategy in India-Action Plan, and Road Safety in Urban and Rural Roads. IRF India Chapter has systematically covered almost all aspects of road safety for reduction of road fatalities, as envisaged in the UN Decade of Action which had been launched in May 2011.

All the previous Conferences were attended by a large number of Indian delegates, including some delegates from abroad. The deliberations covered all aspects responsible for reduction of road fatalities – (i) Road Design, (ii) Vehicle Design, (iii) Public Education and Awareness, (iv) Enforcement (v) Availability of Medical Help. Speakers at the Conferences were experts from India and abroad and made several recommendations, based on their experiences. The Conference Recommendations were formalized in the panel discussions, on the basis of the Conference presentation and proceedings and were furnished to the authorities responsible for implementation. I am glad to note that these recommendations have been favourably considered by the Government and systematic changes have been brought about in various aspects relating to road safety. Most importantly, IRF Conferences have been able to bring road safety into focus with the general public, authorities and media.

The relevance of the theme of the 8th Conference is to identify the needs for additional safety measures and other aspects of actions before commencing operation of high speed corridors in rural as well as urban scenario, so to reduce accidents, which have been taking place very frequently. The Conference will also extensively deliberate on road safety issues related to mobility. The Speakers are experts in their own field and their words of wisdom would enlighten the whole issue. I am sure the 8th Conference would be a successful event as usual and it will add knowledge for tackling the ever-increasing figures of road fatalities on high speed urban and rural corridors.

An International Exhibition 'Intertraffic India 2013' is also being held alongside the Conference and the two events will be of mutual interest to the Conference participants and Exhibitors.

I wish the Conference and the Exhibition all success.
